Let us take a moment to search our brains for our memories of soul food. Does it include a holiday, Thanksgiving or the fourth of July? Is it Sunday after church? Whenever it is, tap into the feelings of joy, the noise, and the smell of various dishes. Was it oxtail, jerk chicken, rice and peas for you as it was for me? Maybe you had meatloaf, fried chicken, mashed potato, and macaroni and cheese. Whatever items are included in the spread, soul food invokes numerous happy memories. As tasty as physical food and the memories attached, the experience and long-term benefits are no match for food that feeds your soul. Let's dive into the benefits of soul food.

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35 NIV

Spiritual Soul Food provides eternal nourishment.

Soul food provides eternal nourishment while physical food may spoil, lose its flavor, or cause an illness. On the other hand, soul food can heal your physical body, strengthen your mind, and prepare the entire being for what is to come. Physical food can provide nutrients to the body, but once processed, it is happily discarded, never to be seen again. Spiritual food is processed, provides nutrients to the whole being, and continues to benefit the being as time passes. In fact, the more time passes, the more benefits are yielded from feeding your soul. It can be reprocessed over and over again.

Spiritual Soul Food is shared without financial burden (it’s a shareable meal).

There is nothing better than splitting a bill. Everyone can enjoy a variety of foods while only paying a fraction of the cost. Now I usually like my own food, but the budget is a real thing. Soul food is easily shared without financially burdening the one who chose to share. Soul food is a natural connector grounded in love, removing barriers, and highlighting common interests and struggles. If I choose to share spiritual food, there will always be more than enough to go around. Not only is it a shareable meal, but it is also grounded in the word. The first ingredient of every meal is the healthiest substance to consume in any form.

Spiritual Soul Food is prepared by a master chef specifically for the consumer.

Many of us cannot afford a personal chef per se. However, God has volunteered to meet all of our needs. As the supplier of spiritual food, He knows your allergies, preferences, and cravings. The meal is prepared specifically for the needs of the individual's soul. Any sensitivity is accounted for, as God is intentional. I’m not sure it can get any more natural, and just knowing it's always freshly made is a bonus. It is inexpensive, can be given as a gift, and would meet any environmentally friendly guideline. Why not try it today?

The spirit requires food just like the physical body.

Craving spiritual soul food is no different than wanting its physical counterparts. We crave the smell, great conversation, memory-creating taste, and relaxation (Am I the only one who needs a little rest after a good meal?). My spirit craves the presence of its creator, hungers for the eternal bond, and the peaceful rest that comes with consuming the word. I am what I consume. In an effort to look like a child of God, I have to consume the word.

Matthew 4:4 “Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Funny enough, Jesus was essentially talking about himself as He is the Word. Although I enjoy all types of bread. Jesus said it best, consuming God’s word (SOUL Food) is essential.

Don’t forget to leave a comment. What’s your favorite physical meal? What is your go-to spiritual meal?

As always,

Plant a Good Word
